12-14-2023 - Fraudulent Text Messages

Dec 14, 2023, 11:29 AM

We have received numerous reports that members have received fraudulent text messages claiming to be from HAPO. Members are advised to call the number provided to verify their account information. These messages ARE NOT from HAPO and responding to them may result in your account information being compromised. HAPO would never ask you to perform a transaction in order to protect your funds or request access to your online banking.

Scammers are directing members to provide their online banking username and password as well as their card information, including the CVV code on the back of the card. We are also getting reports of members being told they must conduct a transaction in order to “protect” their money.  This is a scam.

Some easy ways to tell if a text message may be fraud is to look at the number used to send the message. Most text alerts from legitimate businesses are a short, 5-digit number not a full telephone number. If you receive a text with a full telephone number, it is NOT HAPO. HAPO would never ask you to perform a transaction in order to protect your funds or request access to your online banking. We also would not ask you for the CVV code on the back of your debit or credit card. When in doubt, we encourage you to contact HAPO directly for assistance.
